  Denmark Things To DoWe have had one holiday in Denmark, staying at a privately rented holiday cottage close to the Kattegat coast just south of Aarhus and touring the rest of the Danish mainland (Jutland) on a self drive, day trip basis. We went as far north as Aalborg and toured the rest of the mainland down as far as the German border at Flensburg. We will probably return again in a few years time. The southern-most country in Scandinavia, Denmark is as you might expect, accessible by road, rail, air and sea from anywhere else in Europe. Denmark is one of the most family-friendly countries on the planet. No matter where you are, you'll find the Danish people will welcome children and there is always something to keep the whole family entertained. Driving in Denmark compared to UKIf your planning a driving holiday or looking to hire a car you will find that generally the roads are well kept, the Danish drivers are courteous and law-abiding. This could be as a result of the traffic laws and speed limits being rigidly enforced. The Danish motorway network is toll-free, but many tunnels and the major bridges are not and can be quite expensive. (The Great Belt Bridge between Fyn and Jelland (Jutland) for instance costs around the equivalent of £25 one way!) Trunk roads and minor are generally quieter than the rest of central and southern Europe, except of course those close to the major cities of Copenhagen and Aarhus. One major traffic point that we found 'interesting' was that cyclists often have priority, especially when you are turning right, across a cycle lane. The cost of living in DenmarkWe found the cost of living generally high compared with the UK and slightly higher than say Germany and Holland (Netherlands). The noticeably most expensive things were snacks, beer and alcoholic liquor. So if your driving over, we would recommend you take some of your own. Things to do in DenmarkIf you fancy going horse riding it can easily be arranged when in Denmark, with horses for hire from riding schools and centres almost everywhere across the country. There are quite a few riding schools that offer riding holidays on a half or full board basis. Denmark has excellent facilities for both sea and coarse fishing. boat fishing trips can be arranged with local fishermen at many Danish harbours. The original Legoland at Billund is open from March to October and provides good entertainment for children and adults alike. Jylland, or Jutland as we may know it better, is the mainland area of Denmark and is generally flat, perfect for a cycling holiday. With an extensive cycle route network joining the main cities and towns of Aarhus, Aalborg, Esbjerg, Randers, Kolding, Vejle and Horsens.
